Hi, I regularly download rehearsal music from a paid website on my Mac into iTunes, its worked perfectly for years but now suddenly the downloads are being turned into HTML and when I click on it a new tab opens in Safari with the message "couldn't preview this file", it appears Dropbox has taken over something on my Mac, as this is what shows when I look at downloads on my Mac
Update - sync is not turned on for dropbox, I have checked all preferences and even signed out of the account and still my browser sends downloaded music files to dropbox and I cant find any way to get them into iTunes where they used to go.
Hello @SW53, That URL/link looks like a Dropbox shared link, when you visit the URL/link via web browser, do you see a download button on the top? I am guessing that instead of downloading the .mp3 file you have saved the webpage instead. Is it possible to share a screenshot (without any personal info)?
Here are 3 screenshots, 1st one is the mp3 file I want to download, 2nd one is how I usually download it clicking on "download linked file" and what shows in download box, 3rd one is what comes up when I click on the download. Also I have been into my account and can see that Safari seems to be running through Dropbox 4th screenshot. I have tried using the "open in iTunes" link but it does nothing. Any advice gratefully received as I am at a total loss as to why even though I have signed out of Dropbox and unchecked everything in settings that Safari is running through it.
That's not a link to an MP3 file. It's a link to the Dropbox website where you can download (or listen to) the MP3 file. By clicking and selecting "download linked file" you're telling your browser to download the the web page that the link points to; not the MP3 file.
Thanks, but as I said I haven't knowingly given permission for Dropbox to take over my browser, I have been downloading music files from this site for several years, always using the "download linked file", it always went into the download box as a music file which when I clicked on it it played automatically in iTunes, its not doing that now. Even if I click on the "play in iTunes" option it doesn't work. I need a solution to stop Dropbox doing whatever it is doing as I have no permissions set for it to link to my browser, I have even signed out and unchecked all links and permissions to folders but still it persists not only on my Mac but also my iPad. If anyone out there knows how to resolve this issue I would be grateful. If all else fails I will have to try to either roll back my Mac to a previous date or uninstall Dropbox completely but I am not convinced even that would work!!
You're telling your browser to download a link, and since that link is to a web page, not an MP3 file, your browser is downloading the web page. In order for it to work the way you're looking for, the link would need to point directly to the MP3 file, which it doesn't.
As you can see from one of the previous screenshot (4), the browser is running via my personal Dropbox account, how can that be when I haven't even signed into it? If you know how to stop it please tell me so I can remove it. Also prior to having the problem with the music files I have for a number of years downloaded them in the exact same way without any problem, the file automatically opening in iTunes once double clicked, only now its defaulting to a separate tab in my browser linked somehow to Dropbox (screen shot 3) or so it would seem). 2ff7e9595c
